Anita Stewart Artistic Advisor Anita Stewart joined Portland Stage Company as Artistic Director in June 1996. In seeking to create dialogue about the work on the stage, she has created or expanded a number of programs to promote audience involvement. Anita is also committed to fostering new work. During her tenure, programs to promote new work development include—From Away: a collaboration with the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program bringing writers from around the world to present and discuss their work; Little Festival of the Unexpected, a festival devoted to the development of new work which recently had two years of plays published by Stage and Screen in Little Festival of the Unexpected 2000-2001; world premieres regularly staged on the theater’s Mainstage including Laura Harrington’s Hallowed Ground, Kate Moira Ryan’s Leaving Queens, Bart Sher’s The Tales of Washington Irving, Brian Silberman’s Manifest and Anne Bogart’s Culture of Desire; Clauder Compentition, administering the 16 year old playwright competition for writers in the New England area; and Women and the Sea a new play developed with support from a TCG/PEW Residency Grant by writer Shelley Berc currently slated for Mainstage 2004 Season. Under Anita’s leadership, Portland Stage Company has added a studio theater space and is exploring programming options. In addition, Anita designs sets and costumes for several Portland Stage Company productions each season and designs at leading theaters around the country, including Guthrie Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, A.R.T., Steppenwolf, Dallas Theater Center, and Long Wharf Theatre.
